Applications are now available for Leaders of Promise scholarships, Phi Theta Kappa's only scholarship program that provides funding for members still enrolled in their two-year colleges. A total of 10 Leaders of Promise will be selected in 2002. They will each receive scholarships of $500 to assist with completion of their associate degree studies. Applications must be returned to Phi Theta Kappa International Headquarters by May 1. The 10 Leaders of Promise selected in 2002 will be notified in July. Members may download application forms at www.ptk.org/schol/leadpromise/ or contact the Scholarship Programs Department at 601.984.3566. Persons requesting the forms by telephone should have their Social Security number or Membership Identification number when they call. "The Leaders of Promise Scholarship will help me achieve my goals and has 'boosted' me tremendously," wrote recipient Thea Griffith, an aspiring child psychologist who currently attends Mineral Area College in Missouri. President of Lambda Chapter, one of the Society's oldest, Griffith plans to transfer to Washington University in St. Louis and eventually receive her Ph.D. Angela Ragan, a 2001 Leader of Promise from McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas, plans to pursue a doctorate degree in American Studies, specialize in Native American history and teach on the college level. Using education as a tool to eliminate discrimination is her goal. "I hope to help open more eyes to the wonderfully diverse cultures that surround us," Ragan, of Cherokee descent, wrote. Ragan said she uses the service opportunities in Phi Theta Kappa to fight economic discrimination. "Helping those in need often gives new insights on the needy as persons who truly want to better themselves," she wrote. Phi Theta Kappa's Leaders of Promise scholarships are awarded on the basis of leadership potential and academic achievement. To be eligible, a student must be a Phi Theta Kappa member in good standing and currently enrolled in a community college at the time of application. Members must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA on all associate degree course work at time of application. Both part-time and full-time students are eligible to apply. The application requires a 500-word essay; a letter of recommendation from a faculty member at the community college where the student is currently enrolled attesting to the leadership potential of the student; an official college transcript from all colleges the applicant has attended; and a signed statement from the student's Phi Theta Kappa advisor certifying that the student is a Society member in good standing. Because the program is designed to develop leadership potential, Leaders of Promise will be asked to maintain an active level of participation in their Phi Theta Kappa chapter. 2001 Leaders of
