Virginia Regional Coordinator Studies Abroad

Virginia Regional Coordinator Brady Surles achieved a longtime goal in 2001, which took him all the way to Russia. Surles has worked for many years to develop an emphasis on international education at Southwest Virginia Community College in Richlands, Virginia.

In 1997, the U.S. Department of State began to foster a partnership between American universities and institutions in Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union. The primary focus is on teacher exchanges for curriculum development in economics, business development, political science and social science emphasizing better understanding of democratic institutions and economic development.

In 2000, the Department expanded its operation to include community colleges and as a result, Southwest Virginia Community College became the first two-year institution to be accepted for the program. SVCC then partnered with Lipetsk State Teachers Training University in Russia to prepare for the program .

Brady was selected as Project Director and traveled to Russia this past fall to teach the first course entitled "Democratic Governments and the Development of Business" along with instructors from SVCC and Lipetsk. The class included lectures, film and CD presentations, and the Internet program "Blackboard" was used for writing assignments and communication for teachers with Virginia.

The partnership, deemed a total success, will continue in 2002. Congratulations Brady!
