Cathy Cox, Phi Theta Kappa member and alumna of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia, has taken “girl power” to a new level as Georgia’s first female Secretary of State. During her four years in office, Cox has worked to enhance customer service and protection for Georgia consumers, to create a new State Archives facility and to improve the state’s e-capabilities. Her Corporations Division is a leader in governmental e-commerce and her agency won the 2001 Council of State Governments’ award for the best website in the nation. Cox completed her associate’s degree at Abraham Baldwin where she was inducted into the Omega Delta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. “I received one of the most rewarding experiences of my college career as a member of Phi Theta Kappa,” said Cox. “I had the privilege of serving as chapter president, which taught me valuable lessons about planning projects and organizing people to work for a common goal.” Having risen to such a prestigious position of leadership in the state of Georgia, what advice does she give to today’s college student leaders? “Phi Theta Kappa’s focus on academic excellence gave me the opportunity to share ideas and network with fellow students,” said Cox. “As Georgia’s Secretary of State, I continue to use these leadership skills each and every day to develop policies to improve our state. I encourage members to take full advantage of all Phi Theta Kappa’s leadership programs, service projects, and networking opportunities, because the skills you learn will benefit you throughout your career.”
