2003 Honors Satellite Seminar Series to Explore
‘Hot’ Health Topics

  • Just how good is America’s health care system?

  • From in vitro fertilization to cloning, what ethical issues surround new reproductive technology?

  • In terms of health care, have we turned our backs on our grandparents?

  • Do all racial and socioeconomic groups have equal access to quality health care?

  • Should marijuana be legalized?

Don’t miss discussion of these hot topics during the 2003 Honors Satellite Seminar Series, focusing on Phi Theta Kappa’s 2002-04 Honors Study Topic, “Dimensions and Directions of Health: Choices in the Maze.”

The Seminar Series this fall will feature five presentations by experts on issues of health and health care, with opportunities for questions from the studio and satellite audiences. Speakers include Dr. Arnold Relman, editor emeritus of the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine; Dr. Vicki Lachman, a well-known health consultant with interests in the ethics of biomedicine; Dr. Diann Uustal, a clinical ethicist and nurse specializing in end-of-life care; and Dr. Wayne Giles, associate director for science at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control.

During the final seminar, Steven Hager, editor-in-chief of High Times magazine, and Robert Stutman, former narcotics agent for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration responsible for 15,000 high profile drug busts, will debate the issue of legalizing marijuana. Dr. Bill Martin, chairman of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Virginia Commonwealth University will contribute a non-biased scientific perspective.

The Satellite Seminars provide an excellent avenue for your institution to recruit exceptional high school students and to extend continuing education opportunities to local health care providers - all while augmenting your existing honors program.

The five seminars will be broadcast live via C-band/Ku-band satellite on Tuesday evenings this fall at 7:30 pm Eastern Time.
