Model Mediator

Stephanie Fitzsimmons, a Phi Theta Kappa member at Morton College in Cicero, Illinois, recently mediated a vital agreement for teacher contracts between the college’s Board of Trustees and the local teachers union. “My experience as student trustee for Morton College has by far exceeded my expectations,” said Fitzsimmons. “When I was first inducted into the board, I thought that my role would require minimum involvement. This was far from true.” Instead, Fitzsimmons found herself in an unexpected position of leadership.

“As representative of an entire student body, I explained to the board the importance of the faculty to Morton College, its students, and the community,” said Fitzsimmons. “My contribution to the negotiations helped the board pass the teachers contracts, which were publicly recognized by several trustees

Fitzsimmons made a difference, and she encourages others to do the same. “Students need to take a more active role within their college. Participation in college organizations is vital to letting your voice be heard
