The Journey Phi Theta Kappa Chapters Share Their Reading Adventures ... Open an Adventure In Ohio, members from Columbus State Community College and Lakeland Community College are collecting books for "Aunt Mary's Storybook," a prison program designed to promote parenting skills, bonding between mother and child, and literacy. An incarcerated mother records the child's favorite storybook on audiocassette and then the books and tapes are delivered to the child. Society members at Broward Community College's North Campus in Pompano Beach, Florida, are finding "It's an Honor to Read" through their community reading program of the same name. The chapter members are teaming up with honor students from area middle and high schools to share books and to serve as reading tutors for elementary school children. Chapter members at Broome Community College's in Binghamton, New York, took their literacy efforts to the Bronx and Harlem. Last August, a group of Phi Theta Kappans along with volunteer community members delivered approximately 7,500 donated textbooks to two schools in impoverished regions of the New York City School District. The Alabama Region of Phi Theta Kappa gave an international flair to their book drive by shipping the collected reading materials all the way to their adopted school in Russia. The chapter at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in Clifton Forge, Virginia, hosted a book signing/reading program for a recently published faculty member. The group also sponsored a "competitive" book drive to see who could collect the most books. Phi Theta Kappans at Hudson County Community College in Jersey City, New Jersey, hosted a Scholastic Book Fair on campus, making available low-cost books to the community. Scholastic is a global children's publishing and media company. Many organizations sponsor a Scholastic Book Fair as a fundraiser project, splitting the profits made from the books provided by Scholastic.Rather than host the event as a fundraiser, the chapter decided to offer discounted books as a service to the campus and community. "Instead of charging full price, our chapter charged half price, opting not to keep any of the money," explains chapter advisor Theodore Lai. "By charging half price, we were even charging less than some discount bookstores." In Arizona, Society chapters are participating in a book drive to benefit a Native American Reservation. The books will help fill the shelves at the reservation's school library. At Longview Community College in Lee's Summit, Missouri, Phi Theta Kappa members have become "recording artists" by lending their voices to record children's books on audiotape. A local grade school provides the books and the tapes. "The project is very easy to do," notes chapter advisor Sharon Hamsa, "and can be done at the member's convenience." Hospitalized children in La Plata, Maryland, will benefit from the literacy efforts of the Phi Theta Kappa chapter at Charles County Community College. The chapter is videotaping members and others reading children's books for use by hospitalized children. Each videotape along with the book will be donated to the hospital. In Mississippi, Phi Theta Kappa members at Hinds Community College's
Raymond Campus gave a helping hand to teachers by assembling an America Reads resource
notebook. The "resource handbook" includes various resources available on the
Internet, a book list for grades one-six, and many fun suggestions for teachers to use in
motivating their students to read (e.g., "Have an Annual Week of No TV!").
"We appreciate the job teachers have in preparing the future leaders of
America," says chapter advisor Stacey Duke. "Our chapter's goal
is to give students the extra help they may need to become better learners inside the
classroom."
