The Journey Watch Our Regions
Grow! Energy is building in Iowa as plans to organize Phi Theta Kappa's 29th region take shape. The Regional Steering Committee which is comprised of four advisors and three members met on December 11 in Cedar Rapids at Kirkwood Community College to begin drafting the region's bylaws. "This is an exciting time for Phi Theta Kappa and students of associate degree-granting institutions in the state of Iowa," said Regena Peters, chairperson of the Steering Committee. "Our efforts are focused on building a region that recognizes the academic excellence of Iowa students, encourages continued achievement, and enhances the development and growth of Phi Theta Kappa through our students' pursuit of lifelong learning." The group will finalize the region's bylaws at Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny on February 16. Colorado Regional officers hit the road Need some new, fresh ideas on ways to improve your region? Follow the lead of the Colorado Regional Officers and take a road trip! New ideas and strong camaraderie were just two of the many assets gained from their recent trip to the Texas Leadership Conference. The Colorado officers were invited to the Texas Leadership Conference by Texas Regional Vice President Tara Walker after the group met at the 1998 International Honors Institute in Virginia. The Colorado officers drove 32 hours to attend the conference, and found the long drive was a good opportunity to get to know one another and to brainstorm on ways to improve their region. Regional President Lyn Wilchek notes, "Traveling to another region brought us together as a team and motivated us to make this one of Colorado's best years ever. I think as regions we should network as much as the chapters do. We certainly came back with more than just leadership knowledge." Mississippi/Louisiana Region unites through reading project In support of the Society's Service Program, America Reads, the Mississippi/ Louisiana Region conducted a regional service project. Each chapter was encouraged to participate in Mississippi's literacy effort, Mississippi Reads, by donating new books or making monetary contributions. "Service projects such as America Reads help to unify chapters within the region for a common cause," said Norma Hammill, Mississippi/Louisiana Regional Coordinator. "These projects help us all appreciate the importance of service to others." The project culminated the week of Phi Theta Kappa Founders' Day when regional officers and chapter representatives met at the Center for Excellence in Jackson, Mississippi, on November 20, 1998. Representatives from Campus Link/Mississippi Reads were on hand to accept books and $1,000 in monetary donations. Greater Northwest Region smiles for the camera Why is everyone smiling in the Greater Northwest Region? It is most
likely due to the Regional Photo Contest which is in its second year. The winning photo is
published in the regional newsletter, The Evergreen Scene, and the chapter submitting the
photo receives a small gift and a certificate acknowledging their achievement. When
choosing a winner, judges look for the picture which best demonstrates Phi Theta Kappa
members embodying one of the four Hallmarks: Scholarship, Leadership, Service and
Fellowship. Regional Communications Officer Meighan Hagerty adds,
"It's really fun! Chapters are really starting to look forward to learning who the
winner will be. I've never seen this many people taking pictures." Everyone ends up a
winner, because all photos submitted are placed in the regional photo album which is
available for review at all regional events. |
