Nota Bene accepting manuscripts for 1999 edition

Since 1994, Phi Theta Kappa's annual literary honors anthology, Nota Bene, has urged Phi Theta Kappa constituents nation-wide to "take note" of excellent writings penned by Society members. Nota Bene is currently collecting entries for its sixth volume. All current Phi Theta Kappa members are encouraged to submit manuscripts for consideration. The deadline for submissions is May 31, 1999.

Taking its name from the Latin phrase for "take note" or "note well," Nota Bene contains competitively chosen stories, poems and essays written by Phi Theta Kappa members. Nota Bene is the only international publication that exclusively publishes literary works of two-year college honor students. The 1998 volume featured 23 manuscripts, which were chosen for publication out of a record 1,600 entries.

In each issue of Nota Bene, five exceptional manuscripts are recognized with awards. In the 1998 volume, Ann Fine, a member at Central Florida Community College in Ocala, was awarded the Citation Scholarship Award, a stipend of $1,000, for writing the most outstanding entry, Apocalypse, a poem. Four authors received the Donald W. Reynolds Scholarship Awards, stipends of $500 each: Diane Marie Perrine of Central Florida Community College in Ocala for her poem, Degas' Ballerinas ; Ben J. Rodriguez of Rio Salado College in Tempe, Arizona, for his short story, The Best Laid Plans ; Becky A. Sumner of Rogue Community College in Grants Pass, Oregon, for her essay, The Face of the Enemy ; Ken Widner of Jackson State Community College in Jackson, Tennessee, for his short story, Maligayang Bati Lolo (Happy Birthday Grandpa).
