The Officer Orientation: Paving the Way for New Officers

A well-organized orientation for your new chapter officers will give these new leaders a thorough understanding of their duties, and will result in better planning and a more successful year for your chapter. Orientation of new officers should take place as soon as possible after their election. Advisors can provide considerable assistance as past officers conduct the orientation.

Preparing for the Officer Orientation

As an investment in the future of your chapter, chapters may purchase an Officers Resource Packet for each new officer. Each Packet contains eight invaluable Phi Theta Kappa resources, including an updated Chapter Officers Manual, a brochure on the new International Service Program and a 1998-99 Honors Study Topic Program Guide. If the chapter funds don't cover Resource Packets, new officers may wish to purchase their own at the earliest opportunity. The Chapter Officers Resource Packet changes each year; therefore, simply passing on the 1997-98 materials will not be sufficient for new chapter officers.

New officers should be given written statements of their duties so that they may study these and become familiar with them before the orientation. All Society materials should be made available to the new officers prior to the formal orientation. Especially important materials include: the chapter bylaws, the Five-Star Chapter Development Program Guide and the Hallmark Awards Program Guide or brochure. (More)
