The ABC's on the America Reads Challenge Simple Ways Your Chapter Can Get Involved Phi Theta Kappa has officially accepted the challenge...the America Reads Challenge. At the recent International Convention in Nashville, Phi Theta Kappa announced its 1998-2000 International Service Program in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education. The new Service Program has already received enthusiastic response from Phi Theta Kappa chapters everywhere. Many have looked forward to expanding their existing literacy projects while others are ready to meet new challenges in their chapter's comprehensive service program. To help your chapter get started, below are "Simple Things You Can Do" to promote the America Reads Challenge. These ideas -- and others -- are included in the Department of Education's numerous resources available at their web site or by calling 1.800.USA.LEARN. A. Encourage members to volunteer as tutors to read with children. In most cases, your chapter will be able to network with local organizations who already have literacy programs in place...they just need volunteers. B. Ask permission from your college administration to establish a community reading program on campus. Your campus could serve as a safe site in which the reading program could take place. Members could provide transportation for children and tutors. (More) |
