The Journey All-USA Academic Team Applications Available Soon Preparations are underway for the 2000 All-USA Academic Team competition, which will honor 60 outstanding students and their community colleges in the coming year. The year 2000 will also mark the 10th anniversary of the program, sponsored annually by Phi Theta Kappa, USA TODAY and the American Association of Community Colleges. Information has been mailed to all two-year college presidents/campus CEOs, giving them the option of having the All-USA applications mailed directly to their offices or designating a contact for each campus to receive the nomination materials. Advisors usually responsible for this process on their respective campuses are encouraged to check with the president's office about submitting their names as contacts. A fax form has been provided to the campus CEOs to return to Headquarters for campuses in which a contact other than the president will be designated. The form must be faxed to Headquarters by September 20, 1999. The nomination materials will only be mailed to one person for each campus and cannot be mailed to a student. Nomination materials will be mailed to community college presidents or their designated contacts October 1, 1999. Each community college campus is allowed to nominate up to two students. The nomination materials must include the signature of the college president and must be returned to Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters by December 3, 1999. Three teams of 20 students each will be selected through a rigorous judging process to comprise the 2000 All-USA Academic Team. All 60 students will appear in USA TODAY on April 10, 2000. The 20 students selected to the first team will also be honored at the annual convention of the American Association of Community Colleges in Washington, D.C., April 9-10, 2000. Nominees for this scholarship must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 (on a 4.0 grading scale) and should expect to graduate with an associate's degree between September 1, 1999, and August 31, 2000. Students nominated to the All-USA Academic Team will comprise the All-State Academic Team in states participating in the All-State Program. The scores from the All-USA Academic Team judging process will be used to rank students in states with more than one team within their state.
