New Deadline Announced for Guistwhite Scholar Program

The Guistwhite Scholar Program, which annually selects 20 members for baccalaureate scholarship awards, has undergone significant restructuring to enhance the visibility of the program, increase recognition of winners and increase participation. Effective immediately, the application deadline for the Guistwhite Scholarships has been changed to coincide with the All-USA Academic Team application deadline of December 3, 1999. Also effective immediately, students attending senior institutions on a part-time basis will be eligible to apply for the Guistwhite Scholarship Program as long as they take a minimum of six credit hours per semester.

The changes in the Guistwhite timeline were enacted to broaden the impact of the Guistwhite Scholarship Program, which has seen a steady decline in the number of applications since its inception seven years ago. Also, the new timeline will allow Guistwhite winners to be recognized at Phi Theta Kappa International Conventions.

Members applying for this scholarship must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 grading scale) and should expect to graduate with an associate's degree between September 1, 1999, and August 31, 2000.

Special note: Because Guistwhite aspirants must apply during their final year in community college, members who are inducted in the spring immediately prior to their graduations will not be eligible. However, because participation in Phi Theta Kappa activities weighs so heavily in the Guistwhite judging, these members' applications rarely advance past the first round judging.

Applications for the 2000 program will be available in late September 1999. To request an application, please e-mail scholarship.programs@ptk.org or call 800.946.9995, ext. 566. Please Note: All Phi Theta Kappa members nominated for the All-USA Academic Team can be automatically entered in the Guistwhite Scholarship competition by completing one additional form provided in the All-USA Academic Team nomination packet.

For further information, contact Tam Cooper or Lori Warren at ext. 560 or 539 or e-mail scholarship.programs@ptk.org.
