The Journey Just Ask Common Membership Eligibility Questions AnsweredCollege Credit Transfers Q. We have a transfer student who is interested in being a member of our chapter. She has only completed 6 hours at our college so far, but she is transferring 9 hours from another college she attended and has the required grade point average. Is she eligible for membership? A. Grades for courses taken at another institution may be considered when determining membership eligibility if this procedure is acceptable to the institution the student is currently attending. The decision should be addressed in the chapter's bylaws. However, while grades from a previously attended institution may be considered, the student must still complete at least 12 hours of associate degree course work at the college in which the student is presently enrolled. International Students Q. We have an international student on campus who meets our eligibility requirements, but the Membership Application Form says a person must enjoy the full rights of citizenship. Is this student eligible for membership? A. YES. A student does not have to be a citizen of the United States or Canada to be eligible. An international student must enjoy full rights of citizenship of his or her own native country (just as citizens of the United States and Canada must). Maintaining Membership Q. What happens if a member's GPA falls below 3.0 after he/she has been inducted? A. The Phi Theta Kappa International Constitution does require members to maintain at least a "B" average to remain a member of the Society. Your chapter's bylaws should indicate what your chapter's maintenance grade point average requirement is. Members who fall below the maintenance GPA should be notified that they are on probation for one academic term only. Failure to meet the maintenance level at the conclusion of their probationary period results in all membership privileges being revoked. |
