Putting Your Best Foot Forward...

Starting your prospective members off on the right foot is absolutely necessary for success in chapter growth. As officers of your chapter, keep in mind what image of Phi Theta Kappa was portrayed to you when you were a new member. Questions to ask of your executive board: Are we giving potential members sufficient information to make an informed decision about whether they want to accept membership in this Society? What do prospective members need to know in order to make this decision? Does our image match our true selves?

You should always keep in mind what the new members will think of what you say and do. Projecting the right image can be a matter of whether these new members will be actively involved in the chapter or merely use the Phi Theta Kappa stamp on their transcripts.

To help your chapter build a firm foundation with potential new members, I suggest the following:

First, hold an information meeting where you give them a taste of what it is like to be an active member in your chapter. Have an officer and a member speak about what the experience has been for them personally. Giving detailed information of what is to follow (new member orientation, induction) should be the last piece of information given so they will know what the next steps are in becoming a member.

Next, your chapter should host a new member orientation. At this meeting you want to give an overview of your chapter and its day-to-day activities. Giving details about what community and campus projects your chapter is involved in is a good way to peak potential members' interest. Showing a video from the International Convention is also a great way to increase the excitement of the group.

Speaking of excitement -- this is the perfect opportunity to incorporate the Phi Theta Kappa HUG! As you are sharing a great deal of information to prospective members, a good way to break up the monotony of the meeting is to talk about our way of greeting one another. Have a couple of officers demonstrate the hug, then encourage the attendees to exchange a hug with someone they've never met.

Last, but definitely not least, is the induction. This event should be carefully planned so that it is a memorable experience for all members as they become a part of this prestigious Society. A candlelit ceremony with a dynamic speaker will make for a special event. Guidelines for a successful induction are included in the Chapter Officers Manual as well as the Advisors Manual. If possible, involve all of your officers in the ceremony. A great finishing touch for the induction is a reception for the new members and their families.

While all of these events play an important part in encouraging prospective members to get involved with your chapter, the reputation of Phi Theta Kappa on your campus and in your community can be your best form of persuasion. Together, let's set a goal to make Phi Theta Kappa the most prestigious -- and most sought-after -- organization on our two-year college campuses.
