The Journey Scholarship First Remains Mission of Phi Theta Kappa Like the trees that were planted to celebrate Founders Day, Phi Theta Kappa has constantly grown and changed since its inception. Throughout the years of growth, there is one constant that remains the same year after year. That constant is Phi Theta Kappa's purpose to first and foremost recognize scholarship among two-year college students. Founders Day is the ideal time to reflect on the Scholarship First initiative established by the Society's Board of Directors in 1988. This initiative states, "No student otherwise eligible for membership may be denied membership, subsequently dropped from membership, or denied such privileges of membership as wearing honors stoles and tassels at graduation due to a lack of participation in chapter activities." Phi Theta Kappa's Board of Directors recognized that many students have personal and professional commitments that may prevent them from actively participating in chapter activities, yet these members deserve the same opportunities for recognition of their academic excellence as the students who can participate in every activity. As Phi Theta Kappa celebrates its eightieth year, make a commitment that your chapter will promote Society activities as opportunities for personal growth rather than requirements for earning or maintaining membership. Focusing your chapter on Phi Theta Kappa's purpose will ensure that the organization's roots of recognizing outstanding scholars grow strong, thus, resulting in an organization which can look forward to eighty more years of Founders Day celebrations. "The visionary concept which positioned Phi Theta Kappa so uniquely among honor societies at the time of its founding in 1918," notes Rod A. Risley, Executive Director of Phi Theta Kappa, "was the charge that in addition to encouraging and recognizing academic achievement in the early stages of one's educational endeavors, Phi Theta Kappa would provide opportunities for individual growth and development through scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship programs. It is this component which has led Phi Theta Kappa to become the largest and most dynamic honor society in higher education 80 years following its founding." |
