Mario Cuomo to introduce Millennium topic at International Convention

Mario Cuomo, former Governor of New York and one of the nation's leading political figures, heads a list of prominent speakers for Phi Theta Kappa's 81st International Convention in Anaheim, California, April 29-May 1. Cuomo, who has helped define America's political landscape for two decades, will introduce the 1999-2000 Honors Study Topic, "The New Millennium: The Past As Prologue."

Cuomo served 12 years as Governor of New York, where he won the two largest electoral victories in the state's history. His term in office is remembered for socially progressive legislation addressing the issues of welfare alternatives, child welfare, drug abuse, AIDS education, crime prevention and economic reform. He is author of Reason to Believe, a look at America's past, present and future. Cuomo replaces Bill Moyers, who canceled his appearance due to scheduling conflicts.

1998-99 International President Thomas Jordan will deliver a motivational keynote address at the Convention's Opening Ceremonies.

Speaking on the 1998-2000 International Service Program, the America Reads Challenge will be Carol Rasco of the United States Department of Education. Rasco is director of the America Reads Challenge program. Since introducing the International Service Program at the 1998 Convention, Rasco has participated in a number of regional and international Phi Theta Kappa events as an advocate for the America Reads program.

LeVar Burton, host and PBS's producer of Reading Raining, the highly acclaimed children's series, will also endorse the International Service Program.

Barbara Bain, Emmy-winning actress from "Mission Impossible," and founder of BookPALS, a volunteer literacy program affiliated with the Screen Actors Guild, will make a special International Convention appearance in support of the America Reads Challenge. BookPALS has been selected as the 1999 Convention Service Project. Convention participants are asked to bring new or slightly used children's books for donation to BookPALS.
