Phi Theta Kappa advisor Sarah Shoemaker from Hinds Community College - Vicksburg Campus in Mississippi, has lost 45 pounds this year in an effort to improve her health. After the International Convention in Nashville, at 277 pounds, Sarah vowed to herself and to her chapter that she was going to lead a healthier lifestyle in concordance with the 2002-04 Honors Study Topic, "Dimensions and Directions of Health: Choices in the Maze." "Attending the International Convention helped me realize that I was far from being a healthy person," said Sarah. "I was inspired to change my life." Sarah didn't want to face the challenge alone, so she researched weight-loss plans and settled on one that she felt she could live with for life. She joined a support group that provides her with information about nutrition and exercise, encourages her to reach her weight-loss goals and celebrates with her when she achieves "mini-victories." After talking with her doctor, Sarah set a goal weight of 148 pounds for herself. With 84 pounds to go, Sarah knows that she will have to be patient and committed, but she is determined to lead a healthy life. She also has a very supportive family and chapter members who are behind her every step of the way. "I thank the many Phi Theta Kappans who have been my cheerleaders," says Sarah. Way to go, Sarah!
