Top Chapter Award Goes to Chipola Junior College

Phi Theta Kappa's 2003 Most Distinguished Chapter is Nu Chi, from Chipola Junior College in Marianna, Florida.

"I can only hope that Nu Chi's recognition will inspire other Phi Theta Kappa chapters from small schools to work hard to impact the lives of others," said chapter member Ryan Waters, one of the group of Chipola members who accepted the award on stage at the Hallmark Awards Gala. "We were all honored to be one of the chapters recognized for making a difference in our area."

The Chipola chapter also won Hallmark Awards in all four categories, based on the following projects:

  • Scholarship: developing a comprehensive health and wellness project providing information and promoting awareness about a different health issue and a related type of cancer for each month of the year.
  • Leadership: hosting a conference to develop leadership skills, to which 500 area high school sophomores and juniors were invited.
  • Service: sponsoring "A Day in the Life" project challenging the campus, community and region to donate a minimum of 24 hours of service to health issues of their choice; and a Gold Ribbon Campaign to benefit the research and treatment of childhood cancers and the local Locks of Love program.
  • Fellowship: establishing the Chipola Regional Honor Society Coalition, which enabled chapter members to share service projects with high school students

The chapter, which was awarded the Most Distinguished Chapter honor for the first time, was also presented with an educational software package valued at over $30,000 from The Right Education, an online benefits partner.
