Conquering Cancer by Raising Funds for Cancer Research

The American Cancer Society contributes approximately $100 million to cancer research each year.

While there are many ways Phi Theta Kappa members can get involved in the fight against cancer, most chapters have included fundraising for cancer research as part of their service program.

From Relay For Life to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Phi Theta Kappans have raised thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society, and are gearing up to raise even more money for the 2003-04 academic year.

Here are some tips to get the most bucks for your bang!

Sponsor an Event:

  • Art/Sports/Collectible Items Auction
  • Craft Fair
  • Garage Sale
  • Night Out Packages
  • Block Parties
  • Fashion Show
  • Board Game Night
  • Movie Night
  • Dances for a Cure
  • Golf Tournament
  • Soccer/Basketball Tournament
  • Cutest Baby Contest
  • Best Lawn Contest
Fundraising in Your Community
  • Walk Your Neighbor's Dog
  • House-Sit
  • Pet-Sit
  • Do Yard Work
  • Do Odd Jobs For Your Neighbors

Fundraising in Your Workplace or on Campus

Hold a No-Bake Sale
Chapter members pay so they don't have to bake anything.

Brown Bag Lunch Day
Ask your co-workers or fellow students to donate the money they would have spent going out to lunch.

Change Makes a Lot of Cents
Place change jars throughout your campus to encourage students and faculty to contribute their loose change (coin cans available through the American Cancer Society).

Hole-In-One
For a donation, let people try to putt a
hole-in-one on a portable putting green.

Skunk Your Fellow Employees
Use a stuffed skunk or any other "offending" animal and leave it on someone's desk; they have to donate money to have it removed and then request who to send it to next.

And finally...

$ Raise your money in honor of a friend or co-worker who survived cancer, or in memory of one who did not survive.
$ Be enthusiastic when asking for money. Let them know where the money goes.
$ Start early! Don't procrastinate!
$ Be creative! Think positively!

You Can Do It! The money you raise is important in the fight against cancer!
