Institute Attendees Invited to Participate in Kappa Klatch!

Honors Institute participants are invited to take part in Kappa Klatch, described as an oral tradition celebration of the Honors Study Topic, in a coffeehouse setting. Kappa Klatch is scheduled for Thursday evening.

Interested persons should plan a three-minute reading or recitation of short poems, short prose vignettes or other literary excerpts, relating to Phase II of the Honors Study Topic, "Directions of Health: Choices in the Maze."

See www.ptk.org/honors/guide/02-04suppl/intro.htm for more information.

Ideas for Kappa Klatch Readings:

  • Albom, Mitch. Tuesdays with Morrie. A young man visits his terminally ill mentor. The book explores the trials of dealing with illness on both a mental and physical level.
  • Angelou, Maya. The Last Decision in Shaker, Why Don't You Sing? This four-stanza poem touches upon the right to die issue as well as the responsibility toward the elderly.
  • Armstrong, Lance. It's Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life. This aptly titled autobiography relates the author's battle with cancer and his struggle and desire to triumph and live.
  • Hemingway, Ernest. "Indian Camp." The Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway. This terse story concerning a doctor's choices in responding to a medical emergency is rife with ethical problems.
  • Kaysen, Susanna. Girl, Interrupted. Kaysen deftly renders her often darkly funny observations about hospital life. Her brief essays challenge the conventional thinking about what is normal and what is deviant.
  • Miller, Arthur. Death of a Salesman. This drama deals with themes of aging, depression and suicide as well as the greater themes of illusion vs. reality.
  • Plath, Sylvia. The Bell Jar. This classic is one of the best-told tales of a woman's descent into insanity.

Sign up for Kappa Klatch at Honors Institute registration on June 9. All Kappa Klatch participants must attend a practice session, and all selections must be approved by Kappa Klatch Directors Connie LaMarca-Frankel, ptkadvisor1@yahoo.com, and Richard Rouillard, rrouillard@okccc.edu.
