Phi Theta Kappa members at Landmark College in Putney, Vermont, recently enjoyed lunch with Vermont Governor Jim Douglas. Governor Douglas invited the chapter after learning of their achievements at the New England Regional Convention. The chapter received a Regional Milestone Award, the Pinnacle Scholarship Award, and was recognized as a Five Star Chapter. These prestigious honors are even more extraordinary in light of the mission of Landmark College, to serve only those with learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, and other similar cognitive disabilities. Chapter advisor David Mulholland comments, "These students, all with educational diagnoses, have competed successfully and excelled among the best two-year college students in America. There was no easing of requirements - no separate tract, simply because they had learning difficulties. Instead, their educational achievements and service work are testaments to what is special in each of them." The chapter also received letters of recognition from U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy and the Vermont State Legislature by joint resolution, and a phone call from White House staff acknowledging their achievements.
