Phi Theta Kappa chapter advisors Dr. Roger Ekins of California and Dr. Scott McLean of Arizona were named recipients of the 2003 Mosal Awards, which include stipends of $5,000 each for professional development and personal enrichment. Ekins, professor of English and chair of the Honors Program at Butte College in Oroville, California, was charter advisor of his campus chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. His Mosal Award stipend will allow him to research and review the writings of Niccolo Machiavelli and other sources, pursuant to a proposal for a textbook on leadership. Ekins anticipates that the book could be used to train Phi Theta Kappa's student and faculty leaders as well as supplementing the Society's current Leadership Development Studies materials. Ekins is author of Defending Zion, the story of Mormon journalist George Q. Cannon, nominated for a "Best Documentary History Award" from the Mormon Historical Association. McLean is professor of speech communication at Arizona Western College in Yuma, is a National Institutes of Health consultant and associate editor of The Journal of Multicultural Nursing and Health. His Mosal Award stipend will fund preparation of a teacher's guide and workbook on integrating diverse storytelling styles and multicultural perspectives into the traditional speech communication classroom. This publication would serve as an ancillary to McLean's previously published textbook, The Basics of Speech Communication. Mosal Award stipends were increased to $5,000 this year, and the pool of advisors eligible to apply was considerably expanded. Mosal Award applications for 2004 will be available in the fall.
