While all regions present awards in categories based on the international Hallmark Awards Program, each region also has awards unique to their region. In March, the New Mexico Region established the Pathfinder Award, to recognize a chapter or individual whose efforts have been "above and beyond the call of duty." Regional Coordinator Chuck Bohleke says the award also will encourage more participation in this young region. The challenges of this year's regional convention gave him the perfect opportunity to implement the award. The Phi Alpha Chapter at New Mexico Military Institute accepted the charge of hosting the convention at the last minute as the previously chosen venue was cancelled. The Phi Alpha Chapter members, lead by advisor Major Linda Scott, provided an outstanding program, accommodations, and resources for the convention. Their level of commitment deserved to be rewarded with a special award, something that would reflect well on the degree of effort that had gone into planning the regional convention. Bohleke explained that the name of the new award was inspired by his father's special World War II Army unit, the Pathfinders, who parachuted into France the night before D-Day, June 6, 1944. "This new award will only be given on such occasions as are warranted by some outstanding contribution by an individual or chapter for the good of the region," Bohleke said.
