Patriotism, war and terrorism are topics on everyone's mind these days, and explaining these current issues to young children is a daunting task. The Beta Gamma Pi Chapter at Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona, reached out to elementary school children in their community with the "Skyview Project." Local firefighters and police officers joined chapter members at the school, where they talked about their jobs and answered the children's questions about current world events. All the children had fun assembling ribbons and pins for a September 11th memorial, and older students gathered around a fire truck at lunch to hear the firefighters' firsthand stories of their experiences at Ground Zero. In the words of chapter officer Tiffany Stewart, "I think it is important to teach the children about what happens in the world - good or bad. We need to answer their questions and answer them honestly. I feel that hiding what happens, or pretending that it doesn't happen at all, only hurts them. After all, history does repeat itself."
