Three Phi Theta Kappa chapters and one Society member say that participating in the USA Today Case Study Challenge gave them a broader perspective on health issues - and also earned each of them a $500 award. The chapters from North Harris College and Cy-Fair College in Texas and Skyline College in California, and member Matthew Christopherson from Mount San Antonio College in California, were recognized at the Society's recent International Convention in Anaheim for their winning entries, which also appear on the USA Today Collegiate website, www.usatoday.com/educate/college/student-home.htm. "Participating in the USA Today Case Study Challenge was wonderful for our chapter," said Cy-Fair advisor Susan Edwards, whose chapter entry was titled "Obesity: An American Epidemic." "This project gave us the opportunity to work as a team to delve deeply into our Honors Study Topic," Edwards continued. "We had lively discussions about the impact of obesity on the wellness of our society and future implications if we don't modify our behavior. The Challenge also gave us the opportunity to learn how to put together a comprehensive case study." The chapter will apply their $500 award toward an endowed scholarship for future Cy-Fair College students, Edwards said. "Vaccines" was the award-winning entry submitted by the Skyline College chapter. Advisor Dr. Christine Case said that members found that participation was fun as well as educational - and possibly beneficial in other ways. "Perhaps the activity inspired members to incorporate current events into class projects," Case said. Skyline will use their $500 prize for members to travel to regional meetings and the next International Convention. Other winning entries were "AIDS Awareness," submitted by the chapter at North Harris College; and "Stem Cell Research: The Ethical Quandary of Reproductive Cloning," submitted by Christopherson.
