Take Advantage of Regional Summer
ExcursionsSeveral
Regions Visit Headquarters
This summer, three Phi Theta Kappa Regions will travel to Phi Theta Kappas Center
for Excellence in Jackson, Mississippi. On June 8, the Oklahoma/Arkansas Regional
Coordinator Deborah Crow, along with several regional officers, advisors and
members toured the Society Headquarters and also visited the small town of Canton,
Mississippi, the original home of Phi Theta Kappas Headquarters. On August 10, Phi
Theta Kappa will host a joint visit by Kentucky Regional Coordinator Margo Hamm and
Virginia Regional Coordinator Brady Surles along with regional officers, advisors
and members from both regions.
Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters extends an invitation to all chapters and regions to visit
YOUR Center for Excellence. Groups may even request special workshop presentations to
learn more about Phi Theta Kappa programs during their visit. To arrange a Headquarters
tour, contact Chapter Officer Coordinator Tracy
Thomas-Wade at 601.957.2241, ext. 580.
Four Corners Honors Institute To Convene in Colorado
Chapters in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah are invited to attend the Four Corners
Honors Institute, July 27 - 29 at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, being planned
by the Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona Regions. "We feel this area of the country is
rich in culture, customs and traditions," said Colorado Regional Coordinator Leigh
Bessey, referring to the conferences theme addressing the 2001-02 Honors Study
Topic, "Customs, Traditions and Celebrations: The Human Drive for Community."
Indiana Region Tours the Lost
City
In search of a legendary community, the Indiana Regional Alumni Association, along with
Indiana administrators and faculty, recently boarded a Carnival Cruise ship in Port
Canaveral, Florida, and headed out to sea. The group had the opportunity to shop, snorkel
and tour the Lost City of Atlantis exhibit, housed beneath the Atlantis Hotel in Freeport
on the Grand Bahamas Island.
New England Encourages Summertime
Fellowship
The New England Region is planning a summer picnic, open to all members and advisors in
the region. A day of outdoor activities will be hosted at Mitchell College in New London,
Connecticut, on August 11.
Kentucky Travels for Honors Study
Topic Adventure
To jump-start programming for the new Honors Study Topic, the Kentucky Region is planning
a trip to historic Bardstown, Kentucky, in July. While there, members and advisors will
attend the Stephen Foster Outdoor Drama, "My Old Kentucky Home."
Illinois Region Explores
"Community"
Officers of the College of DuPage chapter in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, are organizing a
regional gathering at the Bristol Renaissance Faire on July 14. The event is a look at the
customs, traditions and celebrations that made the people of Middle Ages England a
community. Members and advisors have the opportunity to both observe and participate in
the many events scheduled throughout the day. Illinois invites members from all regions to
join them.
Middle States Region Invites
Neighboring Regions to Family Picnic
The Middle States Region will host its Third Annual Regional Picnic at Hershey Park,
Pennsylvania, on August 3. Each year the region invites all members, advisors, alumni,
family and guests for a day in the park and an all-you-can-eat lunch. The activity is seen
as a necessary part of getting to know one another before starting into the academic year.
In the spirit of Phi Theta Kappa fellowship, this year the Middle States Region has
invited all their neighboring regions New England, Ohio, Virginia and New York
to join in the fun.
