Get Ready for the 2000 Honors Institute - The ULTIMATE Phi Theta Kappa Experience!

Immerse yourself in the 2000 Honors Study Topic in sunny San Diego! Phi Theta Kappa's 33rd annual Honors Institute kicks off June 18 - June 25 on the beautiful University of San Diego campus. Surrounded by the blue waters of the Pacific, Phi Theta Kappa members and advisors will discuss the Honors Study Topic, “In the Midst of Water: Origin and Destiny of Life,” with the brightest minds in the business.

The registration fee is $795 per person, and a form of payment must accompany the registration form. The registration fee covers lodging for the week and all meals on campus except on Thursday, June 22, when no Institute events are scheduled. The deadline for registration is May 31.

Phi Theta Kappa held its first Honors Institute in 1968 in an effort to offer a small, intimate venue for the discussion of the Honors Study Topic. The Honors Institute has been an annual event ever since, offering participants the combination of inspiring, timely lectures given by field experts and guest speakers, followed by in-depth and stimulating discussions facilitated by Seminar Leaders, specially-trained Phi Theta Kappa advisors.

Known as the ultimate Phi Theta Kappa honors programming experience, members enjoy the intimate nature of the Honors Institute while having the ability to explore the nation's most fascinating cities.

The spectacular city of San Diego is no exception. Considered the birthplace of California, San Diego is the second largest city in the state and is both a modern metropolis and a popular year-round resort. Spreading from the coast to the desert, encompassing cliffs, hills, mesas, canyons and valleys, San Diego possesses one of California's largest natural harbors – peninsulas shelter San Diego Bay from the ocean and provide miles of shoreline.

But it is not just the water that will attract Phi Theta Kappans to the San Diego shoreline. Honors Institute participants will delight at a day with Shamu as they spend an interesting and thought-provoking afternoon at SeaWorld. The 150-acre marine zoological park features shows, aquariums, marine-life attractions and rides – plus lots of great opportunities to get to know Phi Theta Kappa members from all over.

Of course, after half a week of intense lectures and discussions, who couldn't use a day off? Don't worry – you get one! Thursday, June 22, is “R&R Day” – a day for Phi Theta Kappa members to rest, relax and explore. Members can explore the city at their leisure, or they can choose to take optional tours at their own expense to either Balboa Park or across the border to Tijuana.

Balboa Park features some of the city's finest museums, including the Japanese Friendship Garden, the Aerospace Museum, the Museum of Art, the Natural History Museum, the Museum of Photographic Arts and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Tijuana, the fourth largest city in Mexico, is also the fastest-growing metropolis in North America. Explore the Plaza del Rio Shopping Center, the Centro Cultural, the Avenue of the Heroes, the Jai Ali Fronton, and more.

Be a part of the ultimate Phi Theta Kappa experience! Fun, fellowship, inspiring discussions and stimulating lectures, the Honors Institute is the perfect way to get up-close-and-personal with the new Honors Study Topic and set the stage for a successful academic year.
