Phi
Theta Kappa Is Keeping
America's Promise
"It's
time to shift our focus to main street, where real work awaits us. We
cannot hope to reach millions of youngsters at a stroke. It can only be
achieved one community at a time, one neighborhood at a time, and one
child at a time. "
General Colin L. Powell, Founding Chairman
In
Virginia…
At Eastern
Shore Community College in Melfa, Phi Theta Kappans adopted a first grade
class at Pungoteague Elementary School. Since September 2000,
members have visited the class to tutor the
children in reading and math, read stories, play educational games and
go to recess with the class. Says first-grade teacher Katherine Hickman,
"The children love the students and ask over and over, 'Are the college
kids coming today?'"

BIZWORLD
Volunteers Teaching Kids
About Business
BizWorld
is a business simulation in which third through eighth graders start
their own businesses designing, manufacturing, marketing and selling
friendship bracelets. The simulation teaches business concepts through
experiential learning while engaging students in activities that
reinforce math, science, art and language arts. The four modules
- Design Day, Manufacturing Day, Market Day and Finance Day - are
designed to be two hours each and are taught on separate days. Volunteers
teach BizWorld and there is no cost to schools or volunteers for
the program.

In
Massachusetts…
Phi Theta Kappans at Massasoit Community College in Brockton sponsored
a trip to the aquarium for third graders from Whitman Elementary School.
The youngsters were amazed by the sea creatures they encountered, including
one particular favorite, a green sea turtle named Myrtle. The chapter
also sponsored an essay contest for the children to write about what they
had learned at the aquarium. The top three winners received gift certificates
and "Certificates of Excellence" were presented to the non-prize essay
authors. In addition, each classroom was presented with gifts from the
aquarium, including jigsaw puzzles, storybooks and a life-size replica
of a green sea turtle, just like Myrtle!
In
North Carolina…
Haywood Community College members sponsored an opera performance for 1,200
children in Haywood County, North Carolina. The one-act opera, The Three
Little Pigs, was performed by the Opera Express, a program of Opera Carolina's
Education and Outreach Department. Educators receive opera study guides
and activities that teach the children various skills, including writing,
history, art and vocabulary.
In
Michigan…
Chapter members at St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron chose
to work with an organization called Save Our Neighborhoods and Streets
(SONS), an after-school mentoring program for disadvantaged elementary
students. The program allows kids to gather in a safe environment, get
assistance with homework, have a snack and enjoy fellowship with their
peers in a constructive way.
In
Mexico…
In conjunction with The Mexican Outreach Project and Travel/Study Program
at Seminole Community College in Sanford, Florida, Phi Theta Kappa members
were able to help set up a new library in Coba during a three-week stay
in Mexico. In order to establish the library, members of all three organizations
had to renovate a donated building, build bookshelves, categorize the
books by subject, and furnish supplies, such as pens, paper and a typewriter.
Before leaving, the students distributed approximately 200 library cards
to families living in Coba.
