"It's Made All the Difference…" Many chapters have developed their own type of "passing the torch" program where outgoing officers lend their knowledge of chapter programs to incoming officers. Take a look at what these officers had to say about their orientation experiences. Debbie Sanchez, Eastern Shore Community College, Melfa, Virginia - "Our chapter advisor, Robin Rich-Coates, provided us with an orientation last summer. I learned a great deal not only about my position as vice president, but also about all of the officer positions in our chapter. Our advisor gave a short lecture, but the training was mostly interactive. We also began discussing ideas for possible activities this year and got to know each other better. I feel that it was a great way to bring the chapter officers closer together." Rosaland Reid, Cincinnati State Tech-Community College, Cincinnati, Ohio - "We had an intensive seminar where the officers from the previous year met with the officers for the current year and went over the responsibilities of each job. The orientation was conducted on a Saturday afternoon, and we included lunch. The chapter advisors were also in attendance. We did ice breakers and awarded prizes to make everyone comfortable. Each of the chapter advisors outlined their roles and responsibilities within the organization. We read through the officer manuals as a group, and we had an intensive question and answer session afterwards." Dorida Rucaj, Victor Valley Community College, Victorville, California - "We met at the house of the outgoing chapter president for an interactive training session. The new officers had a lot of questions that the outgoing officers were able to answer. They gave us different hints and ideas on how to do things and/or improve the chapter. It was a tremendous help for me and the rest of the new officers. The meeting really leveled out a lot of our insecurities and fears. We are definitely going to do the same for the next group of incoming officers." Jolene Seibel, Northland Community & Technical College, Thief River Falls, Minnesota - "During our orientation each new officer met with the outgoing officer and our advisor to discuss the duties of his/her new office. It was very useful to know what and how things were usually done. I believe it made this year move more efficiently. I am sure that we will do the orientation again this year." Jane Presta, Cañada College, Redwood City, California - "Our chapter provides new officer orientation each year. For the past three years each orientation has been different. We haven't perfected it yet! The orientations are held at our first "Changeover Dinner." Our chapter founder seats the outgoing and the incoming officers for each position together with instructions for the outgoing officers to bring and share information with the incoming officers." <-- Read about "Great Beginnings, The Basics of a New Officer Orientation"
