2001 Honors Institute

Chapter members and advisors interested in attending the 2001 International Honors Institute, scheduled for June 17-24 in Atlanta, Georgia, are urged to submit their applications as early as possible. Phi Theta Kappa's Honors Institutes, termed "the ultimate honors program experience," have been sellouts for the past four years.

Andrew Young, former Atlanta Mayor, former U.N. Ambassador and a leader in the Civil Rights movement, will headline an outstanding slate of speakers, who will discuss various interdisciplinary aspects of the 2001-2002 Honors Study Topic, "Customs, Traditions and Celebrations: The Human Drive for Community."

Additional speakers include author and cultural activist Cornelia Walker Bailey, a member of the Geechee community of Sapelo Island, Georgia; Dr. Steven Hochman, Director of Research at the Carter Center; Dr. Donald Kraybill, authority on Anabaptist and Amish communities; Dr. Arthur Murphy, anthropologist and Latin American studies specialist; Professor Robert Saldarini, who will address diversity and technology issues; futurist and author David Zach and Honors Committee members Connie LaMarca-Frankel and Richard Rouillard.

Honors Institute participants will also take field trips to CNN Studios, the Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site and the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library. Additional activities include an evening "Kappa Klatch," a coffeehouse experience devoted to literary presentations on the new Honors Study Topic.

No events are planned on Thursday, "R&R Day," when participants are free to explore Atlanta and the nearby area on their own.

Information materials, including registration forms, were mailed in mid-April to all chapter advisors and chapter and regional officers. The registration fee is $795 per person. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and will be accepted only if accompanied by an acceptable method of payment -- check, credit card or college purchase order. Persons should not send duplicate registrations - i.e., by fax and by mail.

The registration fee covers double occupancy residence hall accommodations, all meals on campus, and transportation and admission fees to Institute field trips. Travel and off-campus meals are not included.

Confirmed participants will receive confirmation packets containing instructions for arrival, conference and residence hall registration, a day-to-day schedule and sign-up information for optional "R&R Day" tours.
