THE POWER OF THE PEN The Kansas Region has enjoyed Dawn Kortz's humor and wit since she became a member of Dodge City Community College in Dodge City, Kansas. Soon, college students throughout the country will gain a glimpse of her spirit in the sixth edition of the Bedford Guide for College Writers, the third most widely used English Composition college textbook. The guide, available for use in 2002-2003, will feature Kortz's essay "A Real Old Timer," replacing the current student essay in the chapter "Writing from Conversation." "I am very excited about this honor," said Kortz, who serves as Vice President of Service for her chapter and Western District Vice President for the Kansas Region. "I hope my inclusion in this prestigious publication will bring honor to my chapter, my region and the Society in general." FROM PENNSYLVANIA TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE Westley Moore never dreamed he would travel to England this September to study at the prestigious Oxford University. The Phi Theta Kappa alumnus from Valley Forge Military College in Wayne, Pennsylvania, was recently chosen as a Rhodes Scholar. "I was totally shocked when I realized I had been selected as a Rhodes Scholar," said Moore. "I know the solid foundation I built at Valley Forge Military College has prepared me for this new challenge, and I hope to enjoy continued success." Moore has already demonstrated he has the drive to succeed. Upon his graduation from Valley Forge, he transferred to Johns Hopkins University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations. While at Johns Hopkins he developed a program with the Baltimore public defender's office called Students Taking A New Direction, or STAND, pairing juvenile offenders with college mentors. "I credit my commitment to community service to Phi Theta Kappa," said Moore. "The Society helped instill in me a sense of selflessness. My involvement in Phi Theta Kappa helped me learn how to spread my blessings to others who may not be as fortunate. WONDERING ABOUT WATER? Want to brush up on the Great Lakes? Interested in learning more about tributaries? Dr. Christine Case, advisor at Skyline College in San Bruno, California, figured Phi Theta Kappa members might be. So, she developed the Ultimate Water Quiz - a series of ten water quizzes posted on the web so all members could learn about water while exploring the Honors Study Topic, In the Midst of Water: Origin and Destiny of Life. "Our web site is used by other Phi Theta Kappa chapters so their members may participate in Skyline's Ultimate Water Quiz," said Skyline President Dr. Frances White. To test your water knowledge, visit www.smccd.net/accounts/skyline/honors/ kappa/home.html. NEITHER HERE NOR HAIR Kissing a pig for charity is one thing - but sacrificing your hair is quite another. Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College advisor Charles Koci did just that by putting his 12-inch ponytail on the line for 4,000 cans of food to benefit a Salvation Army food drive. Motivated by the prize, chapter members in Orangeburg, South Carolina, collected over 5,000 cans for the food drive. Koci, true to his word, ceremoniously sacrificed his ponytail and donated it to Locks of Love, an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients. However, a little less hair doesn't keep a good man down. Koci and his chapter recently held a fantastically successful new member induction. "I love it when a plan comes together," said Koci.
