Chapter Tackles Four Hallmarks With One Reading Event

What better way to incorporate Phi Theta Kappa’s Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship, than to organize a fun-filled day of reading to hundreds of children.

That is exactly what the Phi Theta Kappa chapter at Mitchell College in New London, Connecticut, did by co-hosting their first National Education Association’s Read Across America Day on March 1, 2002. During this event approximately 250 students, faculty, staff and administrators read to hundreds of children at 147 locations, including public and private schools, childcare programs, hospitals and libraries.

A week before the event took place, the chapter went to a local radio station to share with area listeners their collaboration and sponsorship with the radio station. On the big day, the chapter helped organize the buses to get the students across the city to the various reading locations. Participants also purchased hundreds of children’s books and presented them to the schools.

According to chapter advisor Bill Strader, Read Across America Day provided the chapter a great opportunity to reach out to their community with scholarly fellowship and service by sharing the importance of reading to children.

The National Education Association’s Read Across America is the biggest one-day literacy celebration in the United States. It is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that not only celebrates the joys of reading, but also honors Dr. Seuss, whose birthday falls on March 2.
