Chapters’ Enhanced Membership Programs Use Five Star Theme

Using the Five Star Chapter Development Program as their guide, many Phi Theta Kappa chapters have developed a Five Star Membership Development Program.

This version of an enhanced membership program provides members with concrete incentives to increase their level of activity within the chapter. The member chooses how active he/she wants to be - from one star to five stars.

Chapters provide new members with a form, outlining the required activities for each level along with the rewards for each level attained.

To ensure the effectiveness of the program, chapter officers at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Gautier, review the program requirements and rewards each year and make changes as necessary.

(The program) has increased participation in our chapter tremendously,” says advisor Kay Sims. “The members enjoy the competition and being able to flaunt their rewards. Each year’s success increases the participation the following year.”

Chapter officers at Palm Beach Community College in Lake Worth, Florida, have also noticed a dramatic improvement in participation. “We may have had seven or eight active members and about 20 people attending our meetings,” says chapter officer Terry Valenti. “After putting a Five Star Membership Program into effect, we now have about 50 members attending meetings regularly, and about 20 active members.”

Valenti says the program allows members to feel more ownership in the chapter’s success. “Besides getting members more involved, it helps to create more leadership within the chapter,” Terry continues. “We also are able to do a lot more service projects and activities.”

Participating members enjoy instant gratification. “As each member reaches a new level, we hold a pinning ceremony during our regular meetings.” Members receive congratulatory hugs and a special Phi Theta Kappa star pin from the chapter’s officers.
