International Honors Institute: “An Opportunity of a Lifetime”

Eva Stoudemire, 2001-02 West/Northwest Vice President, is studying network administration, network multimedia and web development at North Seattle Community College in Seattle, Washington.

Phi Theta Kappans: In June you will have the opportunity for one of the most meaningful experiences in your college careers: attending the 2002 Phi Theta Kappa Honors Institute in Greenville, South Carolina, which launches the new 2002-04 Honors Study Topic, “Dimensions and Directions of Health: Choices in the Maze.” Elsewhere in this issue of The Journey you will read all about the Honors Institute speakers, activities and events. I would like to tell you what attending the 2001 Honors Institute meant to me, and I hope what I have to say will inspire you to consider making the Institute a part of your Phi Theta Kappa experience.

The 2001 Honors Institute in Atlanta, Georgia, gave me a chance to truly understand Phi Theta Kappa’s intent to educate its members in a erudite and academic setting. The speakers and Faculty Scholars, Phi Theta Kappa advisors who have been especially trained to lead seminar discussion groups, helped us explore the Honors Study Topic in ways that still affect me.

Because of them, I returned to my home state of Washington not as a mere student, but as a scholar, armed with knowledge of our changing world. I was able to share the message of the Honors Study Topic with my chapter, along with other chapters and regions I visited.

The Institute provides a relaxed, almost serene atmosphere. This encouraged me to become involved in the various seminar activities and discussions. Sharing concerns and thoughts with other members helped stretch our collective imaginations because we realized that we could learn about each other, from each other.

The Honors Institute draws participants from across the nation and abroad, making this an opportune time to get acquainted with other Society members. The intimate atmosphere promoted the spirit of fellowship, allowing participants to renew old friendships and establish new ones. Through this setting, I realized how fortunate I am to be allied with academic high achievers who also are committed to service and fellowship. I bonded with endearing friends in Atlanta that I was glad to see again throughout my travels on behalf of our Society.

Truly, my most cherished and prized Honors Institute experiences were the Kappa Klatch and the Storytelling events. Here, members presented and expressed their original works on how they relate to the Honors Study Topic through poetry, prose, song, short skit or a treasured story. To witness the magnitude of such talent was a moment I’ll never forget. At this year’s Honors Institute, you can also enjoy the Kappa Klatch and the Honors Institute Choir - either onstage as a performer or in the audience!

The 2002 Honors Institute has an exciting slate of five speakers who will address various facets of the new “health” topic. They will inspire, enlighten and inform, as did former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young in Atlanta, who enchanted the attendees with his knowledge and humanitarian experiences. It was a splendid moment for me to be able to ask Mr. Young questions that beforehand could only be answered in textbooks and encyclopedias. Here was a man who knew Dr. Martin Luther King, who established relationships with presidents and other dignitaries here and abroad - and I know that meeting the 2002 Honors Institute speakers, many of whom visit the seminar groups, will be equally meaningful to all of you.

My rewards from the Honors Institute are evidenced by the growth I experienced. Academically, I continue to have a new perspective on my life, my family and my community. I want to learn all I can, even if it means stepping out of my comfort zone.

Professionally, the Honors Institute helped me understand that knowledge is power and the key to success is being educated and willing to aid the human drive for our people. Applying myself at the Honors Institute gave me more than what a college degree can offer. Again - I urge you to apply to attend this outstanding event.
