While most college students spend Spring Break relaxing in the sun, 15 members at Anoka-Ramsey Community College in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, spent theirs remodeling a 94-year-old house. The chapter’s vice president of service, Robyn Jones, organized the project along with the Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. Beginning last fall, Robyn solicited volunteers, coordinated staff, and planned fundraising tactics. The result of her hard work was a meaningful and successful service project. The volunteers, most of whom had no previous construction experience, spent three days putting down sub-flooring, installing a partition wall, building a door frame, and hanging insulation and sheetrock. By the end of day three, new friendships had formed and chapter members walked away with a sense of accomplishment and pride. “We all lived with 94-year-old dirt in every crevice of our bodies for three days,” said Robyn, “yet we all looked forward to coming back each day. All of us felt empowered by what we had learned and accomplished. We worked on the house as if it were our own.” The chapter plans to make this an annual service project.
