The New Officer
Orientation Basics

Q: What is a New Officer Orientation?
A: A chapter-sponsored program designed to prepare incoming officers for their newly attained leadership roles.

Q: Who Participates in a New Officer Orientation?
A: Usually the advisor and outgoing officers facilitate this training program. However, some chapters involve college administrators. This proves especially useful to new officers who are not familiar with their college’s student activities rules and guidelines.

Q: How Long Should a New Officer Orientation Last?
A: Orientation length varies from chapter to chapter ranging from a few hours to several sessions over a few days. Determining the length of the program depends mostly on the size of the officer team, the needs of the membership and complexity of yearly goals.

Q: What Items Should Be Provided or Made Available to New Officers?
A: When possible, outgoing officers should provide a notebook or file of things accomplished during their year of service as well as current Society publications. This provides officers with the information they need to begin planning for their term in office.

Q: When Should a New Officer Orientation Take Place?
A: Almost immediately after the election is the best time to schedule a new officer orientation. The orientation may take place a few days, weeks or even months later. However, it is important not to wait too long. Remember, outgoing officers will need to be available to help with training before graduation or the end of the semester.

Q: Should New Officers Review the Chapter Resource Manual During the New Officer Orientation?
A: Yes. When feasible, the chapter should review the information in the Chapter Resource Manual during the orientation. Upon being reported to Headquarters, incoming chapter presidents will be mailed a complimentary copy of the Chapter Resource Packet that includes the Chapter Resource Manual. Other officers may print copies of the material relevant to their positions from Phi Theta Kappa’s website at www.ptk.org.
