Three days of excitement, information and activities await you at Phi Theta Kappa’s 2001 International Convention in Denver, Colorado, March 29-31, when some 3,800 Society members, advisors, administrators and alumni gather for a celebration of community college scholarship, leadership, fellowship and service. The Convention will take place at the Denver Adam’s Mark Hotel and the Colorado Convention Center. Convention Registration and Hotel Reservation forms may be downloaded from the web site, www.ptk.org/conv2001/ or obtained by calling Fax on Demand, 601.984.3548 and requesting documents 9301, 9302 and 9303. Hotel reservation and Convention registration forms will also be included in the Convention Planning Guide, mailed to all chapter officers and chapter advisors in November. International Convention Speakers Headlining the Convention activities are four dynamic speakers — former U.S. Secretary of Education William Bennett, famed mountain climber Stacy Allison, National Endowment for the Humanities Chairman Dr. William “Bill” Ferris, and Phi Theta Kappa International President Heidi White. Known as America’s foremost cultural and social advocate, William Bennett enjoys an international reputation as a respected and influential voice in world opinion. He frequently speaks out on contemporary political, economic and intellectual issues, calling for the necessity to maintain moral values, self-discipline, responsibility and courage. The first American woman to climb to the top of Mt. Everest, Stacy Allison now has a new mission — to encourage people to move beyond self- and outside-imposed limitations to fulfill their lifelong ambitions. Allison will inspire Phi Theta Kappans to reach for the highest peaks when pursuing their own dreams. Dr. William “Bill” Ferris has served as Director of the National Endowment for the Humanities since 1998, and is founder and former Director of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi. Ferris will introduce the 2001-02 Honors Study Topic during the Convention. Heidi White, 2000-01 International President of Phi Theta Kappa, is a student at Burlington County College in Pemberton, New Jersey. By gubernatorial appointment, White is one of two student members serving on New Jersey’s Commission on Higher Education. International Convention Highlights New this year at the International Convention will be the Information Technology Center. Sponsored by the world’s first online institution, Jones International University, the Information Technology Center will offer Convention participants opportunities for online information and instruction, including checking email and navigating the Phi Theta Kappa web site. The annual Transfer College Fair will allow students to meet one-on-one with representatives of senior colleges and universities offering thousands of dollars in scholarships to Phi Theta Kappa members. Advisors, members and alumni may choose from among 32 Educational Forums, offering in-depth instruction in Society programs and ideas for personal development and career enhancement. Other highlights of the International Convention will include the Opening Ceremony and Parade of State and National Flags, the campaign for International Officers for 2001-02, including the Political Rally, and presentations of the 2001 Hallmark Awards.
