Promise with Local Culture
“Life Through Moving Water” is the theme of the New Mexico Region America’s Promise and Honors Study Topic project. The region is asking each of its 17 chapters to collect samples of water from various moving water sources throughout the region that flow toward the Rio Grande / Rio Bravo River. Chapters will be networking with youth organizations and working with them in obtaining the water samples. The chapters and youth groups will create a container and a logbook to document the water’s source and destination. The collected water from each chapter will then be combined and emptied back into the waters during a ceremony at a central location. A small amount of the combined waters will be saved to pass onto the next “generation” of regional officers and members.
Following traditional Native American views of the value of flowing water, this project will focus on the renewal of life. An emphasis will be placed on the importance of water as the carrier of life with the hope of bringing awareness that youth are the future caretakers of the waterways. The project as a whole will symbolize the renewal of life in the Phi Theta Kappa New Mexico Region. In addition, New Mexico is inviting other regions to participate in this unification ceremony to symbolize the vitality and life of the Phi Theta Kappa Society.
