Leaders Wanted:
Campaigning for Regional Office
By Faye Christian

Phi Theta Kappa offers its members leadership opportunities through officer positions on three distinct levels: chapter, regional and international. Some chapter officers are unaware of the opportunities to serve Phi Theta Kappa on the regional and international level. We invite you to consider the benefits of both.

Just as International Officers are key in the functioning of Phi Theta Kappa internationally, so are Regional Officers critical to the operations of each region. Depending on the region, officer’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Setting regional goals

  • Presiding over regional meetings

  • Speaking at chapter inductions

  • Tracking and promoting the region’s Five Star Program participation

  • Promoting the Honors Study Topic and International Service Program through regional projects

  • Encouraging chapters to compete for regional hallmark awards

  • Serving as a general resource for chapters
In exchange for these responsibilities, regional officers receive benefits not available to other members:
  • Opportunity to attend the Regional Officer Academy at International Convention

  • Complimentary Chapter Resource Packet, the Journey Newsletter and other important mailings from Headquarters

  • Travel throughout the region

  • Regional officer training retreats and seminars available regionally

  • Opportunity to be nominated for the International Distinguished Regional Officer Award

  • Some regions offer complete or partial registration for International Convention

  • Some offer scholarships for International Honors Institute

James Daugherty, Phi Theta Kappa’s 2002-03 International President, served as Northern District Vice President for the Kansas Region before his election to international office. “Speaking in front of more than 100 Phi Theta Kappa members scared me to death when I ran for regional office,” said Daugherty, but eventually the position helped him prepare for the pinnacle of student leadership in our Honor Society — International Office. “As a regional officer,” Daugherty reflected, “I was able to strengthen and develop my leadership style, intensify my passion and understanding of Phi Theta Kappa, and mold my life in the areas of fellowship, leadership, scholarship, and service.”

The influence of regional officers cannot be underestimated. Regional officers provide the personal touch that chapters need to succeed while assisting International Officers in accomplishing Society goals.

Each year, the International Officers make it a priority to connect with the regional officer teams in their division through conference calls and regional meetings. This communication is vital in keeping regional officers up-to-date on Society programs and initiatives, while the International Officers learn what the goals and priorities are for each region.

“The motivating force behind me running for Regional Office was that I wanted to stay involved with Phi Theta Kappa, but on a higher level,” shared Teresa Boarman, 2002-03 Eastern District Vice President of the Oklahoma/Arkansas Region. Having served as chapter president, Teresa set her sights on regional office. “The main advice that I can give to someone considering regional office is to be sure that they have the full support of their family and school and to know what your strengths and weaknesses are going into the campaign.”

Many regional officers discover strengths they didn’t know they had. “By the end of my term,” recalled Daugherty, “I thought nothing of speaking in front of the region that had transformed me into a leader. I realized that every member of Phi Theta Kappa is like family; they want to see you succeed.

“Holding a regional office is like candy. One must unwrap the packaging before enjoying the goodness within,” concluded Daugherty. “Likewise, one must campaign for office in order to experience the abundant opportunities that are presented to regional officers.”
