Leaders Wanted:
Campaigning for International Office

By Jennifer Stanford

“Running for International Office brings along an experience that will last a lifetime.”

At the 85th International Convention in Anaheim, California, chapter voting delegates will elect five new International Officers: International President, Division I Vice President, Division II Vice President, Division III Vice President and Division IV Vice President.

International Officers preside at the International Convention and the International Honors Institute, present speeches and workshops at Society regional conferences and work closely with chapters in their division to promote the programs and goals of Phi Theta Kappa, the largest honor society in higher education.

Campaigning for International Office has been described by many candidates as one of the most rewarding experiences of their college careers. “Running for International Office brings along an experience that will last a lifetime,” said Dana Van Deman, who was elected Division IV Vice President at the 2002 International Convention. “Whether or not you walk away an International Officer, you will have accomplished much beyond your imagination.”

Serving as an International Officer is a serious commitment, which comes with many responsibilities; however, the rewards are many. In addition to the public speaking, organizational and leadership skills gained, International Officers also receive numerous tangible benefits, including:

  • A $2,000 scholarship and the International Officer pearl-accented lapel pin upon successful completion of their term in office

  • A $1,000 stipend to help cover personal officer-related expenses during their year in office

  • Travel and accommodation expenses to participate in all Headquarters-approved travel to regional conferences, International Convention and the International Honors Institute.

Who Can Run For International Office?

Any Phi Theta Kappa member who is in good standing with his/her local chapter and who is EXCLUSIVELY enrolled in a two-year college is eligible for International Office. All International Officers must continue to be EXCLUSIVELY enrolled in a two-year college and must take at least 6 associate degree credit hours for two terms during their one-year tenure in office.
