Nota Bene: Society's literary anthology seeks submissions
Creativity Wanted

Attention aspiring writers: Phi Theta Kappa is accepting manuscripts for consideration for publication in Nota Bene, the Society's honors anthology and the only international literary journal showcasing the works of community college students.

Nota Bene accepts poetry, short stories, formal and informal essays, and dramas. The competition is only open to members of Phi Theta Kappa, who may submit as many works as they wish, in as many categories as they choose.

"I encourage all creative writers to take advantage of this opportunity to be published," said Tryfon Tolides, a 1999 Nota Bene author and winner of a $500 Reynolds Scholarship Award, and a member of Phi Theta Kappa from Manchester Community College in Connecticut.

"I was very proud when my poems were chosen for publication - recognition of one's work is always very gratifying. Although I have written poems all my life, being chosen for Nota Bene made me realize I could actually make writing a career," said Tolides, who recently received the Hayden Carruth Poetry Prize at Syracuse University, where he is a graduate student.

Each year approximately 25 manuscripts are selected for publication in Nota Bene. The best overall submission receives the Citation Scholarship of $1,000; and the four runners-up receive the $500 Reynolds Scholarships. Nota Bene is distributed to all college presidents, chapter advisors, chapter presidents, friends of the Society, and to all community college libraries, even those without campus chapters of Phi Theta Kappa. Nota Bene has been published since 1994. Phi Theta Kappa founded the honors anthology to encourage and to recognize outstanding writing by community college students.

The deadline for submissions to be received for the 2003 edition of Note Bene is December 6, 2002.

Nota Bene Guidelines:

  • All manuscripts must be typed or printed - handwritten submissions cannot be accepted.

  • Each manuscript must have an attached cover sheet listing the author's name, permanent address, telephone number, email address, college and chapter, and advisor's name and telephone number. In the event of multiple entries, each entry must have its own cover sheet.

  • Entries should be sent to: Nota Bene, Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters, 1625 Eastover Drive, Jackson, MS 39211

  • Entries cannot be returned. Authors of manuscripts selected for publication will be notified in February. Names of authors selected will be announced in the Golden Key News Briefs and listed on the Phi Theta Kappa website.
