The Phi Theta Kappa chapter at Bellevue Community College, the second largest higher education institution in the state of Washington, is working to make the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout® a statewide project for all community colleges. Kennedy James, vice president for the chapter, collaborated with the local Health Department several months ago to secure grant funding for their efforts. As a result, $10,000 has been awarded to Bellevue Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter and the Student Government Association. James also secured an additional $2,000 to purchase promotional t-shirts and “Tobacco Quit Kits” that will be available for distribution by any participating Washington community college. Press coverage is also expected. “So far, every community college I’ve contacted in our state has agreed to a partnership to make the Great American Smokeout® a huge celebration!” said James. If you’d like to share your Conquering Cancer service project, please contact Jennifer Stanford at jennifer.stanford@ptk.org or 601.984.3532.
