THE MICHIGAN REGION The Michigan Region is “Building a Better World by Building a Better Region” this year. Their program has been designed by the members of the region in an effort to strengthen the chapters and improve their communities. The idea is to involve each chapter in Phi Theta Kappa programs and community service by providing a menu of selected activities. Chapters choose activities from categories such as communications, education, the Honors Study Topic and the America’s Promise Service Program. Chapters that complete a specified number of activities from each category not only receive regional recognition, they also have built a strong base for completing goals in the Five-Star Chapter Development Program and participation in the Hallmark Awards Program. THE CAROLINAS REGION Taking note from the Five-Star Chapter Development Program, the Carolinas Region has developed a five-level program of its own. To encourage chapters to participate in the International Service Program, America’s Promise: The Alliance for Youth, the region is implementing a Five Wagon recognition awards program. For each of the five America’s Promises (Mentor, Protect, Nurture, Prepare and Serve) that a chapter keeps, it will receive a red wagon lapel pin at the Carolinas Regional Convention in late February. THE TENNESSEE REGION After discussing the impact of this year’s Honors Study Topic, “In the Midst of Water: Origin and Destiny of Life,” on their local landscape, the Tennessee Region is implementing a region-wide Honors Study Topic Project. The project is two-fold and involves all the chapters in the region. For the first part of the project, each of the region’s 15 chapters will pledge to “adopt” an area of a local stream, lake or river and work in conjunction with the state on clean-up measures. The second part of the project is a challenge to each chapter to build, or have built, a nest box for Wood Duck habitation. The region plans to photograph and document each duck habitat for a scrapbook to be displayed at the 2001 Tennessee Regional Convention in early March. THE MIDDLE STATES REGION Earlier this year, the Middle States Region introduced a new project that has gained national exposure. Project Graduation: Feed a Body/Feed a Mind is designed to help alleviate illiteracy and hunger in America by asking graduating students to donate children’s books and non-perishable food items at their commencement ceremonies. The Middle States Region has invited other Phi Theta Kappa chapters and regions to get involved by engaging schools at different grade levels across the nation. Several chapters have accepted the invitation, including the one at Edgecombe Community College in North Carolina. Collection boxes are set up on both their Rocky Mount and Tarboro campuses.
