Chapter President Steven D. Jones of Trident Technical College in Charleston, South Carolina, gives this first-person account of how his chapter members are keeping America’s Promise. We at Alpha Epsilon Omicron Chapter strongly believe in the fundamental goals of America’s Promise. With much anticipation and a desire to build a lasting impression on our future leaders of tomorrow, we began our involvement in Kids Café. This special project stood out for a variety of reasons. The most important being that it involved helping young children from Ronald McNair Elementary in North Park Village, the state’s largest low-income housing project. Words could not describe the sadness in our hearts as we witnessed the horrific conditions these children had to endure day after day. Kids Café provided us with an opportunity to make a difference. One of our major concerns was the health and general well being of the students. Under the Kids Café program, we instructed them on how to fix simple nutritious meals in a safe environment. To stimulate their minds, we showed them how learning can be fun through games and rewards for completing their studies. Our chapter as a whole felt like this was a worthwhile way for us to give back to our community.
