First “Leaders of Promise” Scholars Announced

Ten members have been selected as Phi Theta Kappa’s first “Leaders of Promise” and will receive scholarships of $500 each to further their associate degree studies. Recipients were selected for their demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic achievement, based on applications submitted to Phi Theta Kappa International Headquarters. The scholarships are being awarded for the first time this year and mark Phi Theta Kappa’s first scholarships created to help fund associate degree studies.

The 2001 Leaders of Promise are:
  • Norma Fewell, Ivy Tech State College, Kokomo, Indiana

  • Thea Griffith, Mineral Area College, Park Hills, Missouri

  • Ghada Hallal, Valencia Community College - Osceola Campus, Kissimmee, Florida

  • Rachel Kluesner, St. Louis Community College - Meramec Campus, Kirkwood, Missouri

  • Ariel Lumbard, McLennan Community College, Waco, Texas

  • Erika Peters, Grossmont College, El Cajon, California

  • Anthony Priestas, St. Petersburg College - Tarpon Springs Center, Palm Harbor, Florida

  • Angela Ragan, McLennan Community College, Waco, Texas

  • Lisa Wilson, Des Moines Area Community College, Ankeny, Iowa

  • Jack Zahora, College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, Illinois

More than $62,000 has been contributed to the Leaders of Promise Scholarship fund by Society members, chapters, regions and other constituencies since the scholarship program was unveiled at the 2000 Convention in Orlando.
