From the north to the south, and all points in between, Phi Theta Kappa regions used the summer months to plan projects and activities that embrace the 2002-04 International Service Program, “Conquering Cancer” and the 2002-04 Honors Study Topic, “Dimensions and Directions of Health: Choices in the Maze.” Colorado The summer of 2002 will go down in the record books as one of the worst wildfire seasons in United States history. The Colorado Region responded to their state’s wildfire emergency by organizing a service project that recruited help from neighboring regions as well. A total of 225 chapter volunteers from the regions of Arizona, Colorado, Greater Northwest, Nebraska/Wyoming, Nevada/California, New Mexico, Pacific and Rocky Mountain-Cascade provided manpower and other services to those who have been displaced or threatened by the fires. The region didn’t stop there. Colorado also formed an alliance with Habitat for Humanity to help construct two houses in Somoto, Nicaragua. Fifteen representatives from the Colorado Region traveled to the Central American country in early August. While abroad, they also conducted a health clinic for local villagers in the small remote village of Coquille. Volunteers carried supplies that were donated by Colorado members, including medical and school supplies. For more information on Colorado’s service projects, contact Regional President Shawn Klawitter at shawn.klawitter@ptk.org or Regional Secretary Dana Ward-Haworth at dana.ward-haworth@ptk.org. Regional Officers now have a primary contact person at Phi Theta Kappa International Headquarters. For assistance, regional officers should contact Regional Programs Coordinator Faye Christian at faye.christian@ptk.org or 601.984.3530.
