Long-time Phi Theta Kappa Advisor Carole Gavin of Burlington County College in Pemberton, New Jersey, has battled breast cancer and emerged victorious. In honor of her strength and determination, the Phi Theta Kappa chapter at Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey, created the Carole Gavin Scholarship. The Carole Gavin Scholarship is designed to assist with the educational expenses of members who have been touched by cancer. A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to one member in each of the four Phi Theta Kappa divisions. The Bergen Community College chapter pledged the first of the four scholarships and has initiated a nationwide campaign to raise money for the remaining three. In wholehearted support of the efforts, Gavin says, “Scholarships offer hope, opportunity and the fulfillment of dreams. This initiative and the greater International Service Program, Conquering Cancer, offer opportunities for us to touch people’s lives in positive ways that cancer never could.”
