Phi Theta Kappa Interns
‘Summer of a Lifetime’

"Twenty-four hours was not enough time in the day to do everything. My job at the Library of Congress was exciting, and the things we did as a group were extraordinary!”

That’s how Phi Theta Kappa Intern Sylvia Chaffee summed up her eight weeks in Washington, D.C. She also visited with congressmen from her home state of Kentucky and explored the museums, monuments and cultural attractions of the nation’s capital.

“I never imagined that I would be involved in such a diverse and exciting environment,” said U.S. State Department Intern Erinn Bogner, who counted as one of the highlights of her summer, “shaking hands with Secretary of State Colin Powell.”

Kristen Hurst, a Phi Theta Kappa Intern at the National Association of Counties, saw President Bush arrive at the South Lawn of the White House and attended Congressional hearings on Capitol Hill.

On the job, the interns were responsible for substantive projects, a well-known feature of the Phi Theta Kappa Intern Program. National Science Foundation interns Stephanie Crisp and Janeth Randall collaborated on a book profiling NSF scholarship recipients, which will be distributed to an audience of national educators. Reading Is Fundamental interns Barbara Wolf and Jackie McEuen helped to coordinate a children’s literacy summer seminar. At the U.S. State Department, Manish Jain helped establish a journalism library in Bosnia.

Twelve interns participated in the 2002 program. Phi Theta Kappa members who are nominated for the All-USA Academic Team Program may apply for the Society’s Intern Program. Nominees for the 2003 All-USA Academic Team will receive Intern Program information and applications early next year.
