Phi Theta Kappa member José Montalvo, a recent graduate of Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida, was named finalist in the competitive 2002 Florida College Student of the Year Award program. The scholarship program sponsored by the Florida Leader magazine honors college students who assume leadership roles in campus and community organizations, maintain high academic standards, and demonstrate financial self-reliance by funding education through work or scholarships. The seven finalists and 13 honorable mention recipients received a total of $55,000 in scholarships and prizes. “This honor has given me an opportunity to reach out to other students with proof that education, commitment, community service, and hard work truly do come with their own rewards,” says Montalvo. “I encourage others to reach out in their own communities...be compassionate and caring, and always find good qualities in others...I was taught to see community service as our human duty, not a required general education course.” Montalvo received a full scholarship to attend the University of Tampa, where he will major in International Business and minor in Latin American Studies and Social Work. He ultimately hopes to attain a master’s degree in International Business and work as an import/export agent for a “morally and ethically conscious corporation.”
