Goodbye Winter
by Ruth Russell
Greenfield Community College
Alpha Sigma Omicron Chapter

I cracked open my window
and lie here in the dark.

Anticipating…

I hear the dull patter of rain
on patches of snow and sodden ground
and the muted wail of a far away siren
through the warm and foggy atmosphere.

Anticipating…

I smell the thick moisture laden air
Pungent with decaying fall
Revealed as winter retreats

And…

I think of summer.
Birds conversing in the night.
The soft applause of leaves
gently nudged by evening breeze.

I lie upon my bed
head propped and ready.

Anticipating.
